Cornell Scored Upsets in Collegiate Chess League

January - March 2021

Hosted by Corporate Esports Association and held on chess.com, this tournament pairs groups of 4 players from each university team against each other for the glorious title of collegiate champions. With over 150 registered teams from 40 universities across the nation, this was a tough match for everyone involved.

Cornell B team (avg chess.com rating: 1928):

Cornell A team (avg chess.com rating: 2267)

Cornell A beat Yale A 10-6 in the first week, then lost to Princeton A 7-9 during week two. We bounced back with a 9-6 win against Northwestern A in the third week and cruised past Harvard A with a 9-6 win in the fourth week as well. However, we lost to the favorite top seed Mizzou A team (avg rating 2855) with 3-11. Last but not least, we defeated UChicago A and MIT A in the 7th and 8th week.

After making it to the playoffs (see image above), we defeated UCSD with a slight margin but lost to the strong UCB A team in the quarterfinals, thus ending our chances at making it to the finals. Nonetheless, this was an amazing run for Cornell! Thank you to all the player for their dedication over the course of 10 weeks.
